From Allan Stevens 15-03-2010
Hi You probably dont know me but I was so amazed to see your comments
about the scooter club and Lee on Solent. It made me remember the good old days.
My name is Allan Stevens and I lived around Stubbington and Rowner from 1958 till 1970.
I bought my first scooter in 1966, an old 1950s LD 175 with the headlamp fixed to the body. Got it from a guy
in Lee on Solent, after which I bought an LI 125 then spent a few quid and bought an almost new Vespa SS180. I
was not a member of the same club as you because me and my mates tried to set up our own club (we called
ourselves "The Dragonflies" but it soon faded out. this was in 1966 to 1968.
We were based mostly around Peel Common and used to go to Lee Tower, the Bluebird and Thorngate Hall, also used
to go to the youth club at bridgemary school, and the youth club in Trinity street Fareham and many
other places.
Some names I remember are, Gary Hawkins, Austin Cooper, Ian Elkins, John Coles, Roger Sale, Kevin
(Frankie) Vaughan. there were loads more but I forget most of them.
We used to take trips out to Bognor, Brighton, Bournmouth etc, always trying to avoid the rockers on their
bikes LOL.
I left hampshire in 1970 and moved to Lancashire and I am still there but, I will never forget my teenage
days in the Gosport/Fareham area. I feel sure our paths will have crossed at sometime in the past.
Hope you did not mind my writing to you.
