The Isle of Wight Rally 1970
The Rally of 1970 was the first of the Scooter rallies to be
held on the Island, they are still going I think. It was a
truamatic experience for me as the story that Dave tells will
show.
We all met up by the ferry in Portsmouth if I remember we
traveled over to Portsmouth on the Gosport Ferry, We arrived on
the Island and started to find our way across to
Sandown I had Terry Langridge on the pillion and Dave and
Angella Twigg were with us. The Campsite was on a holiday park
which had challets for the well off, and a field for the poor
among us to pitch the tents. I had a small 2 man tent so of
course we had 4 people to sleep in it. Me, Terry, Dave and
Angela all squeezed in it, thank goodness it wasn't raining
that night, however due to the small area we had to sleep in it
was quite cosy.
The campsite was quite civilised with a Bar on site, so we
all piled into it to slake our thirsts, after many bevies we
stumbled back to the tent to play sardines, boy that ground was
hard. I remember that the camp site was on the coast and we
walked to the beach early in the morning to see the view.
The events of the next day are laid out in Daves
tale of woe.
Needles to say the event was a great success and has been
repeated over the years.
