The Thorngate Halls Disco
By Marten Holdway
The weekend evenings were spent either driving round or
going to the Thorngate Halls Disco. We all used to congregate
at the back of the Halls, the blokes didn't want to be seen to
dance. Listening to the latest sounds in the low lighting.
Usually the Girl club members were already at the Hall so
all we had to do was turn up, life was so uncomplicated back in
those days.
You know we really didn't know how lucky we were at the time,
but doing this history has made me realise what a great time we
had back then.
I got my appreciation of the Music of Prince Buster and other
Ska and Blue Beat artists at the Thorngate. There was no
trouble that I can remember, a great night was had by all.
Thanks to the people who ran the Thorngate in the early
70's.
Well done them.
